The Last Veil

Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, feels compelled to descend into the underworld ruled by her sister Ereshkigal. She does so of her own free will… and, um, three days later, rises with the support of her sukkal and two gala enlisted by her maternal grandfather. Archetypally speaking, she evolved into Persephone-the-Abducted, and into Jesus. AND we circle back.

“On the Brink”

This spectacular woodcut is used with permission by artist and writer Christine Andreae. It was published in 2016 as part of her Inanna Project.

It’s exactly the abyss I imagined gaping up at me from the floor towards the end of “The Last Veil” when I first choreographed it that same year.

Christine’s Inanna-inspired writings are a huge inspiration for project jelinora, and the whole creative approach of this art-site. Click the button below to discover the first post in her Inanna blog— I recommend clicking through and reading how her own story and art entwines with those of the goddess.

you go down
you go down
you go down
you go down

when the sky will spin and the earth will fall
when you know now you are nothing
nothing at all
you go down
you go down
you go down

when the water runs red and the fire burns blue
and the tethers now are nothing
nothing to you
you go down
you go down
you go down

when the earth does shake and the sky does call
when you know now we are nothing
nothing at all
we go down

when the fire grows cold and the water rusts
the illusions now have nothing
nothing on us
we go down
we go down
we go down
we go down
we go down
we go down

“Do not let your daughter be put to death in the underworld.”

-Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth
